How can I charge my electric vehicle?

This article explains how to charge an electric vehicle for TVDE, detailing domestic and public charging, types of charging stations, step-by-step processes, and good safety practices.

Electric vehicles are increasingly being used by TVDE drivers in Portugal due to lower energy costs and operational advantages. There are two main ways to charge an electric vehicle: home charging and public charging.

Home charging (economical option):

Many electric vehicle drivers prefer charging at home due to safety, convenience, and lower electricity rates. You can use a conventional outlet (slow) or install a Wallbox (faster and safer).

-To charge at home, you need:

  • A charging cable compatible with the vehicle
  • Ensure that the power contracted from the electricity supplier is equal to or greater than the maximum power of the cable

  • For faster charging, you can also install a wallbox

Public charging (best option):

At PCN (Normal Charging Station) and PCR (Fast Charging Station) charging stations, you can charge an average of 80% of your electric car's battery in half an hour, which is perfect during a break between trips. In Portugal, this public network is managed by MOBI.E and includes street stations, shopping centers, and service areas.

-To charge at a public station, you need:

  • An electric mobility app or card

  • Your own charging cable

  • Check the location of available stations

If you choose to charge your vehicle at a public charging station, follow these steps during the charging process:

  1. Switch off the engine.
  2. If you are charging at a public charging station, you must register or validate yourself at the charging station (via an app, with a payment card or via the QR code).
  3. Open the bonnet and connect the car to the charging station (with your own cable or that of the station).
  4. Start the charging process online or in the app.
  5. When the desired charge level is reached, you can stop charging. If the battery is fully charged, charging stops automatically.
  6. Now log off at the public charging station.
  7. Disconnect the charging station from the vehicle by first switching it off at the vehicle.
  8. Start the engine and you can continue your journey.

Important notes on charging electric vehicles:
  • The safety of charging is guaranteed by the charging station and battery safety systems so that it cannot cause damage or pose a danger to people who may be in the vicinity;
  • During charging, the cable is fixed in the vehicle's socket and cannot be removed or damage the vehicle and/or the charging cable;
  • Given the reliability of charging, the driver can leave the vehicle in complete safety, and can check the status of their charge remotely;
  • There is no risk of a short circuit during charging in less favorable weather conditions (e.g. rain, thunderstorms);
  • Optimize the time available for journeys by charging during lunch breaks, at the end of journeys and while offline on TVDE platforms.
