What Types of Electric Vehicle Charging Are There?
In this article, we explain the different types of charging available for electric vehicles, including charging modes, current types, charging stations, and connectors.
Electric vehicles can be charged using two types of current:
-
Alternating current (AC) – typically used for home charging or semi-fast charging at a Wallbox. Safer and better suited for overnight charging, but slower than direct current.
-
Direct current (DC) – used at public fast or ultra-fast charging stations. It allows you to charge 80% of the battery in less than 30–60 minutes, ideal for quick breaks or long trips.
Regarding charging modes, these are classified from 1 to 4, depending on the speed and how the energy is transferred to the vehicle:
-
Mode 1 (Slow AC): Direct home charging via standard outlets (Schuko). Very slow, recommended only overnight.
-
Mode 2 (Slow/Safe AC): Also for home use, but with a specific charging cable that includes electrical safety features.
-
Mode 3 (Semi-fast AC / Wallbox): Residential or public charging with a Wallbox. Uses alternating current and a Type 2 (Mennekes) connector. Supports power up to 22 kW or 43 kW, safer and faster than Mode 1 or 2.
-
Mode 4 (DC fast/ultra-fast): Used at high-power public charging stations. Direct current, charging 80% of the battery in 20–60 minutes, depending on the vehicle and the station. Common connectors: CCS (Combo) and CHAdeMO.
Different charging modes are available at various types of charging stations, strategically located to accommodate both daily charging and longer trips; it is important to understand the characteristics of each before choosing where to charge.
-
PCN - Normal Charging Station (AC): Up to 22 kW, ideal for semi-fast charging, typically found in shopping centers or cities.
-
PCR - Fast Charging Station (DC): Over 22 kW up to 100 kW, allows for fast charging, perfect for short breaks during the day.
-
PCUR – Ultra-Fast Charging Station (DC): 100 kW or higher, suitable for long trips and fast charging on highways.
In addition, each type of charging station offers different connector options, so it is important to know which ones are compatible with your vehicle before you start charging.
-
Schuko – standard household outlet, for slow charging only (Mode 1).
-
Type 1 (SAE J1772 / CEE Blue) – used in older or imported electric vehicles, compatible with AC charging at public and residential stations, generally limited to lower power levels (Mode 2 or 3).
-
Type 2 (Mennekes) – European standard for AC, used in Wallboxes and public charging stations.
-
CCS2 (Combo) – European standard for fast DC, compatible with most European electric vehicles.
-
CHAdeMO – Asian standard, used in Nissan vehicles and some Japanese models.
